Our neighbor gave us a bunch of cucumbers for watching their house while they’re on vacation, but we’re not huge plain cucumber eaters, so this gives me some good ideas to make use of them.

Dine Out: Marra's
Quick review:
Classic red sauce place on Passyunk Ave. in the heart of South Philly. Gruff waitresses, dark wood, big portions. The food was decent and it fits the bill for an Italian craving. Could probably use some updating in terms of menu and decor but as long as it’s on the Ave, it’ll stay the same until the doors are locked for good.

A bottle of sparkling lemonade and a smoked salmon, caramelized leek and goat cheese crepe were a perfect ending...

– Waiting For Good Dough :: Cover Story :: Article :: Philadelphia City Paper
Good article about the dearth of good pizza in Philadelphia. I’m not a pizza snob, but damn if I don’t miss the New York style pizza I grew up eating. At least it’s better than the options in Central PA...

Dinner Out: Nam Phuong
My mom’s visiting for the weekend and we decided to try some place new, so I did a little research and decided on Vietnamese, either the new Le Viet or the Washington Ave standby Nam Phuong. We ultimately decided on Nam Phuong.
It’s a large restaurant with a mix of tables, some pushed together to form more family style tables, other large round tables and some 4-tops. The menu is...
Dinner Tonight:
I was craving some crunchy lettuce, but wasn’t in the mood for a salad.
What to make?
Simple - lettuce cups a la P.F. Chang’s (although I’ve never eaten there, it’s a simple enough concept).
I started up some rice, then sauteed some garlic and ginger in a bit of sesame oil. Once it was fragrant I added some ground turkey. When the turkey was just about cooked through I...
