Open since 1927, the institution [Marra’s] still fires pies in its original volcanic-brick oven, perhaps the only fully operational artifact in South Philly not named Jerry Blavat.

Waiting For Good Dough :: Cover Story :: Article :: Philadelphia City Paper

Good article about the dearth of good pizza in Philadelphia.  I’m not a pizza snob, but damn if I don’t miss the New York style pizza I grew up eating.  At least it’s better than the options in Central PA where you choose from Papa Johns or, well, nothing.

My favorite in Philly is probably SliCE, although I’ve yet to try the two new “hot” places, Stella & Zavino.  SliCE’s pizza has a nice crispy crust, great chunky tomato sauce and quality ingredients.
